Today, I leant my support to a campaign to highlight the threat of the Conservatives to our local voluntary groups. As someone who is heavily involved in Colchester's voluntary services, I know the
effect that the Conservative spending proposals could mean to our local charities.
This year local groups in and around Colchester received thousands of pounds in government grants to support their work. But if David Cameron were Prime Minister, he would cut nearly £100 million from the budget that currently supports the voluntary sector.
Young people, parents and the disabled in Colchester rely on our local voluntary services run by hardworking local volunteers, many of whom I am proud to work alongside. It would be a disaster, let alone a tragedy, if David Cameron’s short sighted cuts meant that groups cut back or closed because they lost grant funding.
In February the Government announced a £42.5 million recession action plan for the voluntary sector in order to help step up – not cut back – their work. Over the last ten years, Labour have doubled public income for the third sector.
David Cameron’s Conservatives are committed to reducing spending in the voluntary sector. This is despite Cameron's claims that he cares deeply about charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups.
